I recently stumbled across Honeytrap during one of my Netflix binges, and this movie seemed too real so I had to do some more research on it. Sure enough the movie was inspired by the South London murder of teenage Shakilus Townsend in July 2008 (also called the Honeytrap Murder). Now of course I can't spill it all, but I can say that this movie shows how young women who are not guided in the right direction easily become victim to crime and violence.

The main character Layla (played by Jessica Sula) struggles with finding her identity in a new town where she is trying so hard to fit in. Layla is a beautiful young teenager that doesn't have a really good relationship with her mom, and her father is absent from her life. This film shows what young girls go through everyday to battle what life throws at them. Being the only child with no one to look up to can definitely take a toll on a young woman's life. She begins hanging with the wrong crowds, getting involved with drugs, and sooner or later she is being raised by her peers.
The male role model is very important in a woman's life. It's so easy for young women to fail victim to older men especially if they are looking to be taken care of, loved, and made feel special as their fathers would. Honeytrap is a clear example of how these feelings towards the wrong man can easily lead you down a dark path. Well I can't spill too much about the film, but I will say that it's one of the best independent movies I have seen in a long time. It's definitely worth the watch. Now go check it out!!
